There is this little red Pomeranian that lives on my block that thinks she is just as big and tough as any dog that dares to walk by her house. She has exceptionally good hearing and starts barking when the other dog is either 2 doors down or across the street on the sidewalk. It just so happens that this little barking maniac lives in my house. Her name is Princess, but we should have named her something a little more fitting, say “Bruno” or maybe “Miss Spike”.
I’m told that Little Dogs use “Big Voices” to make up for what they lack in size. Mine must have been a horse in a previous life. Reasons or not, that barking had to be controlled or we were going to start getting complaints from the neighbors. The Mailman wasn’t too thrilled with her either.
The first thing I did was to call a dog training professional. Since there are so many different methods for this type of training, I wanted to be sure I chose something that was going to work and especially, something that was not going to harm such a small dog.
Here are some of the types of Bark Collars for Small Dogs that are available:
The Citronella Spray Collars which emit a short burst of a harmless Citronella spray directly to the dogs nose and face. The dog does not like the smell and soon learns that barking will bring another spray. This is hugely popular according to many Bark collar Reviews as it is safe, humane, and very effective.
Shock or Vibration Collars: These are designed to emit a vibration/shock to the dogs neck in response to the sound of barking. They can also be operated by a remote for additional behavioral training. Although they can and have been used on the smaller breeds of dogs, they are a bit stronger and really only recommended when other methods have not succeeded. An added note: Use this type of collar with the proper training by a professional, for yourself as well as the dog.
Electronic Collars are reliable with proper instruction and also can be operated remotely either by a hand-held device or a stationary transmitter such as one installed as a parameter fence or within the house or yard.
Ultrasonic Bark Control Collars work similar to the Electronic Collars and can enable you to train your dog quickly and safely. They have a sensor located within a device attached to the collar that delivers a correction. Safe, effective, and they work!
After much research and consideration, I decided to go with a Citronella Spray Collar. I was just a bit apprehensive on trying something a little stronger on my Little Dog. She is nine pounds of fluff with that ‘barky-barky mouth”.
Well, I put it on her and I sure didn’t have to wait long. Within just a very short time, someone walked by the house and she started in. Bark, Bark, Bark….Spray!!!!! She jumped straight up in the air. I know it did not hurt her in any way, she didn’t yelp or cry out. She shook her head trying to figure out what happened. Three more times that morning she got that little spray. And then, there was silence for the rest of the day.
I used this Small Dog Bark Collar with the Citronella Spray for three days and haven’t had to put it on her since. It’s been 2 months! She isn’t traumatized at all. Just finally acting like a nice quiet dog. Now, when she does bark when she thinks there is something wrong, I tell her “Good Girl”. This has been an awesome experience and I know my neighbors are really appreciative. I now have a great little dog that I enjoy and love tremendously.
